『最優秀ブルーグラス・アルバム賞』はもともと「ベスト・ブルーグラス・レコーディング賞（ボーカルまたはインストゥルメンタル）」とされ1989年から始まった賞です。
1992年からは『最優秀ブルーグラス・アルバム賞』（Best Bluegrass Album）となり1993年以降はアーティストの他に、作品に関連するプロデューサー、エンジニア、ミキサーが含まれることが多く、 1995年と1997年には、コンピレーションアルバムのプロデューサーのみが授賞していました。
